Background

Carbon dioxide capture and utilization (CCU) is a pivotal technology in the quest to reduce fossil fuel-derived CO2 emissions and transition towards greener energy systems. As nations strive for carbon neutrality, the significance and urgency of implementing large-scale CCU technologies become increasingly apparent. Despite the progress made, there remains a pressing need for original breakthroughs and innovative technologies. Current research endeavors focus on developing advanced absorbents, adsorbents, membrane materials, and catalytic materials. These endeavors aim to decrease energy consumption and operational costs, enhance efficiency, and foster the widespread application of CCU technologies. Furthermore, integrating various cross-industry and cross-domain CCU technologies and constructing a comprehensive CCU technology industrial chain are paramount for achieving cost-effective and energy-efficient CO2 capture and utilization.

This Research Topic aims to foster the exchange and dissemination of pioneering research and technological innovations in the field of CCU. We aim to highlight the latest breakthroughs, current technical capabilities, and future developmental trajectories within the CCU landscape. The project seeks to catalyze progress across various disciplines, including materials science, process engineering, and industrial applications. By promoting cross-disciplinary integration, this initiative aspires to reserve technologies instrumental for the future carbon cycle and advance carbon governance, thereby propelling the field of CCU science and technology towards new frontiers.

To gather further insights in the field of carbon dioxide capture and utilization, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Post-combustion CO2 capture technologies, including chemical absorption, membrane separation, cryogenic separation, and solid adsorption methods
• Oxygen-enriched combustion and chemical looping combustion technologies
• Direct air capture (DAC) technology for CO2 capture
• CO2 chemical utilization and mineralization utilization
• Integration of cross-industry technologies for comprehensive CCU systems
