About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is closed for submissions.

Background

Health Psychology is a dynamic field that seeks to understand how psychological, biobehavioral, and environmental factors influence mental and physical health, well-being, and illness. Despite substantial progress, many questions remain about the complexity of these relationships and their implications for health outcomes. Recently, studies have made significant strides in unraveling the mechanisms driving these effects, especially in diverse populations, highlighting the need for ongoing research and dialogue within the field to inform public health strategies at both individual and societal levels.

This Research Topic aims to highlight recent advancements and identify emerging themes that will shape the future of Health Psychology. While the field has long endorsed the WHO's holistic definition of health, many intervention models and research frameworks remain disproportionately focused on physical health behaviors. We particularly welcome contributions that embrace a truly biopsychosocial perspective on health. By spotlighting key breakthroughs through high-quality scholarly reviews, we strive to facilitate discourse within the community, enabling researchers, educators, health professionals, and practitioners to enhance evidence-based health practices. Ultimately, our goal is to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in Health Psychology and promote well-being across various demographics while providing practical insights into interdisciplinary approaches and novel intervention models.

To gather further insights in this expansive field, we welcome conceptual articles and reviews (e.g., narrative, systematic, scoping, meta-analyses) addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
o Community health psychology and health disparities
o Health behaviors and strategies to enhance and protect health and well-being for individuals, groups, and organizations
o Psychological, biobehavioral, and social processes supporting healthy development in children
o Health promotion strategies aimed at fostering sustainable healthy lifestyles
o Individual differences in psychological and biobehavioral responses related to health, chronic illness, and healthcare experiences
o The role of modern technology in health, including tele-health, e-health, mHealth, and AI applications within Health Psychology
o The role of qualitative and participatory methodologies (e.g., action research, photovoice) in fostering well-being and collaborative health promotion
o Psychological, interpersonal, and environmental processes impacting physical and mental health, well-being, and illness
o Intervention models explicitly targeting psychological well-being, flourishing, meaning, and social connection
o Health and well-being of health professionals and caregivers
o The role of narrative practices in promoting therapeutic relationships, psychological well-being, and community health

This collection prioritizes cross-cultural perspectives, non-Western contexts, and aligns with global health goals such as SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), to provide comprehensive, in-depth reviews that offer new insights into the complexities of health psychology.

Keywords: Biobehavioral Processes, Health Disparities, Health Promotion Strategies, Tele-Health and mHealth Applications, Psychological Responses to Chronic Illness
