Background

Quantum sciences and materials have profoundly shaped society over last 100 years. It is from medical breakthroughs to quantum computing, and from strategic technologies to sustainability. Just a decade after quantum mechanics emerged, the neutron was discovered. With its intrinsic spin, the neutron became an ideal probe for exploring quantum materials and helping the design of new materials. Complementing this, quantum mechanical simulations have revolutionized our understanding of materials at the atomic level, accelerating innovation. This Research Topic highlights recent advances in quantum materials and the role of neutron-based techniques and simulations in uncovering their properties.

The goals of this Research Topic are fourfold:
- To deepen understanding of how neutrons have advanced quantum materials and science.
- To showcase applications of quantum science in improving life and society.
- To highlight contributions from women scientists in neutron-based quantum research.
- To promote and strengthen international collaboration in quantum science using neutrons.

This Research Topic highlights recent advances in quantum science and materials using neutrons. Over the past decade, significant advances in neutron instrumentation and techniques, along with quantum mechanical simulations have enabled deeper insights into the atomistic properties of quantum materials and facilitated the discovery and design of new quantum materials. We invite authors to showcase their research achievements in this field emphasizing the impact of their research for improvement of life and promoting sustainable society. Submission are encouraged, specially from women scientists, as we celebrate 100 years of quantum mechanics during the UNESCO Year of Quantum.
