This collection is the first volume of this series, please find the new second volume of 'Advancing Perspectives in Eating Behavior - Volume II' here.
The exploration of eating behaviors is experiencing a shift as new research methodologies and innovative therapeutic interventions offer fresh perspectives and possibilities. This Research Topic is dedicated to fostering an understanding of the latest psychological research and technological advancements that positively shape both the study of eating behavior in varied contexts and cultures, as well as psychological intervention for disordered eating. With the integration of diverse scientific disciplines, recent research has begun to unravel the complexities of eating behaviors by examining psychological, biological, and social contributors to eating disorders. The goal is to amalgamate current findings to offer a richer, more comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms that influence eating habits and psychological behavior.
This Research Topic seeks innovative eating behavior research expanding on conventional approaches by incorporating emerging trends and applying novel therapeutic modalities. The collection encourages contributions that not only question and extend existing paradigms but also introduce transformative technologies and methods that could lead to more effective therapeutic treatments and psychological insights for eating behavior.
To refine understanding and foster innovative discussion, this topic welcomes studies related to the following, but not limited to:
• Emerging trends and themes in the research of eating behaviors, e.g., food cognition – dietary and nutrition impacting cognitive function; social effects on eating habits and behavior, such as food choices; scientific approaches to supporting those with lower socioeconomic position to achieve healthier eating behaviors
• The clinical application of new technologies in eating behavior therapy, including digital health tools such as assessment of wearable devices, eHealth, electronic eating health promotion and prevention approaches, text and social media interventions, smartphone and tablet apps. Personalized therapeutic strategies for supporting individuals with eating disorders (ARFID - Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Rumination Syndrome, etc.)
• Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and related novel computational methods that can improve our understanding of eating behaviors and eating disorders.
• Cross-disciplinary research incorporating findings from psychology, neuroscience, and sociology to offer a holistic view of eating behaviors, for example, neuropsychological and biological factors, including neurochemical and physiological aspects that may predispose individuals to developing disordered eating behavior; youth and developmental aspects; social media factors; psychological reinforcement paradigms, etc.
• Global and cultural considerations that influence eating patterns and response to treatments, emphasizing the importance of demographic inclusivity in research and practice.
• Dynamic systems integrating biological, psychological, cognitive, and/or social factors influencing eating behaviors, eating disorder onset and/or treatment, or eating-relevant beliefs and behaviors.
• Societal factors influencing eating behaviors and examination of shifting trends and norms in eating behaviors across populations, cultures, and generational cohorts.
This initiative aims to bridge the current gaps between empirical research and clinical application, enhancing the development of the Eating Behavior section by promoting a breadth of research from various disciplines and perspectives. Through this collaborative approach, contributions should focus on innovative research directions for eating behavior and improve therapeutic practices to support and enhance treatment outcomes for individuals dealing with eating disorders.
