Abstract
Word count: 160 The influence of the socioeconomic and cultural level of the family has been one of the most analyzed factors in the achievement of students in elementary and high school. Some studies have shown that, although the family's cultural capital and its economic level are linked, both have differential effects on learning. This study compared the influence of cultural capital and family economic level of Mexican elementary and middle school students on their achievement in language and communication in the Planea test. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data through path analysis. The results show that there are differences between the influence of cultural and economic capital, which are associated with the type of school support and the educational level of the students. The results, in agreement with previous studies, suggest the importance of evaluating separately both factors in their relationship with academic achievement be-cause the magnitude of the influence of each factor changes throughout the different educational levels.
