About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is still accepting articles.

Background

Consciousness research is a rapidly evolving field that spans multiple disciplines, including psychology, cognitive science, neurology, neuroscience, philosophy, artificial intelligence, and more. Despite significant advancements, the field still grapples with fundamental questions about the nature of consciousness, its neural correlates, and its mechanisms. Recent studies have made strides in understanding perception, awareness, and attention, yet there remain substantial gaps in integrating these findings across sub-specialties. Ongoing debates persist regarding the theoretical frameworks and methodologies best suited to study consciousness. This collection aims to address these gaps by synthesizing diverse perspectives to facilitate a more unified and comprehensive understanding of consciousness.

This research topic aims to compile high-quality scholarly articles that synthesize current knowledge, provide new data, and/or highlight recent advances in consciousness research. The primary objective is to stimulate innovation, steer important questions, and map new possibilities for future directions. We welcome a broad range of submissions that summarize existing evidence, advance current understanding with recent research, and/or propose new theoretical, methodological, and clinical applications. By doing so, we hope to enrich scientific discussion within the multidisciplinary consciousness research community and provide impactful translational value.

Articles may include, but are not limited to, the following themes:

• Neural and Mechanistic Aspects of Consciousness
• Integration and Interdisciplinary Approaches
• Clinical and Developmental Perspectives
• Altered States and Experiences
• Memory and Cognitive Processes
• Philosophical and Conceptual Issues
• Contemplative and Well-being Approaches
• Exploring disruptions in conscious experience as a diagnostic lens for psychopathological conditions, including but not limited to dissociation, schizophrenia, or altered states in mood disorders.
