Background

Sport can offer a positive and healthy environment for athletes and those involved. However, negative consequences may arise from factors such as excessive pressure to succeed, high expectations from others, negative interactions with opponents, fear of failure, and the risk of injuries, among others. However, consequences from stress might not necessarily be negative and previous research has shown that how individuals interpret the situation (as either a challenge or threat) may hinder or promote adaptation. Although stress experienced regularly by individuals, there remains a lack of research on how to effectively manage stress, and specifically on how to mitigate the negative effects and promote adaption resulting from exposure to stress in sports.

This Research Topic is dedicated to advancing current knowledge on psychological stress interventions in sports. We invite studies and methodologies focused on the central theme of psychological stress interventions in this context, including meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, intervention program proposals, as well as theoretical and practical approaches to stress management.

The Research Topic welcomes articles addressing stress interventions for athletes as well as for other individuals involved in sports, including coaches, sports managers, parents, and others. Authors should ensure that both "stress intervention" and "psychological intervention" are addressed and remain the central focus of their contribution.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
• What is the efficacy of the psychological interventions in stress management in sports?
• What is the current knowledge regarding psychological interventions in stress management in sports?
• What theories and conceptual proposals best explain the psychological interventions in stress management in sports?
• What psychological programs can be delivered to manage stress in sports?
