Background

The field of circulatory system diseases encompasses prevalent and life-threatening conditions such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and heart failure, which remain significant contributors to global health challenges. While pharmacological treatments are foundational in managing these diseases, physical therapy and rehabilitation have emerged as vital components in improving patients' functional capacity, symptom management, and quality of life. As recent studies have delineated, advancements in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and neurorehabilitation provide new insights into how tailored physical interventions can induce cardiovascular adaptations and aid recovery. Nevertheless, there is still a need to transform these mechanistic insights into effective clinical protocols, as well as to address the variability in treatment responses among diverse patient populations.



This Research Topic aims to bridge the gap between fundamental mechanistic research and its practical application in the rehabilitation of circulatory diseases. Specifically, we target three primary objectives: identifying reliable biomarkers and physiological indicators to assess rehabilitation efficacy, developing optimized and personalized rehabilitation protocols tailored to diverse patient needs, and incorporating emerging technologies, such as wearable sensors and AI-driven monitoring, into rehabilitation strategies. By promoting collaboration among experts in physiology, clinical practice, and engineering, we aspire to contribute to evidence-based strategies that improve long-term health outcomes in these patients. Submissions are invited that present novel interventions, mechanistic insights from preclinical studies, or real-world applications of rehabilitation programs.



To gather further insights into physical therapy and rehabilitation for circulatory system diseases, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

o Mechanisms of exercise-induced hemodynamic and metabolic adaptations in circulatory diseases.

o Novel physical therapy modalities, including resistance training, respiratory muscle training, and neuromodulation.

o Rehabilitation strategies for managing comorbidities, such as diabetes and obesity, in patients with circulatory disorders.

o Technology-enhanced interventions, such as telerehabilitation and virtual reality applications.

o Patient-reported outcomes and adherence in long-term rehabilitation regimens.

o Ethical and socioeconomic considerations in delivering inclusive rehabilitation services.
