Background

In recent years, physical literacy has emerged as a foundational concept within physical education, health promotion, and inclusive sports. It emphasizes not only physical competence but also the motivation, confidence, knowledge, and understanding required for lifelong engagement in physical activity.

Despite growing interest, significant gaps remain in the conceptualization, measurement, and promotion of physical literacy specifically tailored for children with disabilities. Addressing these gaps is essential for fostering inclusive environments where children with disabilities can thrive physically, socially, and psychologically.

Through this collection, we aim to gather pioneering research that advances our understanding of physical literacy among children with disabilities. By critically exploring effective methodologies and interventions, this topic will contribute to inclusive education and promote evidence-based practices for educators, practitioners, and policymakers dedicated to fostering lifelong physical activity participation among this demographic.

• Developing and refining inclusive conceptual frameworks and definitions of physical literacy for children with disabilities
• Creating and validating assessment tools that reliably measure physical literacy across diverse disability categories
• Investigating innovative interventions and programs designed to effectively enhance physical literacy in inclusive educational and community-based settings
• Exploring strategies for educators and community stakeholders to promote physical literacy inclusively

This Research Topic seeks contributions addressing (but not limited to) the following areas:
• Conceptualizing physical literacy specifically for children with diverse disabilities
• Methodologies and assessment instruments tailored to measure physical literacy inclusively
• Innovative technological interventions (e.g., VR, AR, adaptive tools) to enhance physical literacy
• Inclusive education practices and community engagement strategies
• Policy analyses and recommendations promoting physical literacy for children with disabilities
