Background
In the increasingly diverse educational landscapes, cultural assets, ranging from local traditions to diasporic communal practices, play a crucial role in shaping both educational frameworks and psychological interventions. Insights from school psychology, educational psychology, and special education suggest that cultural adaptations to evidence-based intervention and the development of culturally-tailored interventions (i.e., Afrocentric Interventions) lead to more effective educational outcomes and enhanced psychological well-being. Despite this growing recognition, there is an opportunity for further comprehensive interdisciplinary studies that analyze the impact of culturally inclusive approaches within education systems, such as the use of school-community partnership programs, participatory action research, and including cultural stakeholders in the facilitation of school-based services.
This Research Topic aims to show how cultural assets can be successfully integrated into community-based partnerships and school-based interventions. For example, cultural values, cultural mores, music, and coaching/mentoring relationships in extracurricular activities. We are specifically interested in how these assets can facilitate both educational and psychosocial improvements across diverse community settings. Studies are invited to focus on various aspects of cultural integration, from the design of culturally responsive curricula to the strategies for engaging community stakeholders in educational initiatives.
To gather further insights in this interdisciplinary field, this collection welcomes articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
● Case studies demonstrating the successful integration of cultural assets into school-community partnerships. ● Recruitment programs like Diversifying Black Excellence in School Psychology Inc. for increasing the diversity of professionals working within educational contexts. ● Critical assessments of teaching methods and educational materials designed to be culturally responsive. ● Innovative methodologies for quantifying the success of interventions based on cultural practices. ● Discussions on the policy changes required to foster a culturally inclusive educational environment. ● Culturally-responsive postsecondary educational programs for school-based professionals
This initiative seeks to bring together psychological research to not only enrich our understanding of cultural assets in educational settings but also to enhance the practical application of these insights in creating equitable and effective educational environments.
