The field of electrochemical energy storage and conversion is pivotal as the world transitions toward carbon neutrality and sustainable energy solutions. Recent decades have witnessed an exponential advance in the use of nanomaterials to address core challenges in this domain, such as achieving higher energy density, improving power delivery, extending cycle life, and enhancing conversion efficiency. Despite significant progress, major bottlenecks remain, particularly in balancing performance with cost, longevity, and scalability. Current research actively debates the mechanisms by which material properties at the nanoscale can be harnessed, with scholars leveraging advances in characterization techniques, theoretical modeling, and innovative synthesis strategies to push technological limits. Outstanding questions continue regarding the optimal design and modification of nanomaterials, the control of electrode–electrolyte interfaces, and the realization of stable, efficient, and clean electrochemical processes across varied energy storage and conversion systems.
This Research Topic aims to showcase cutting-edge research that explores the design, synthesis, and application of nanomaterials in enhancing electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies. The goal is to bridge fundamental understanding with technological application, ultimately revealing how nanomaterials can address performance challenges and unlock new functionality in devices such as batteries, supercapacitors, electrolyzers, and fuel cells. We invite contributions that investigate both the theoretical underpinnings and the practical implications, including efforts to model interface phenomena, optimize electrode architecture, and develop advanced strategies for catalytic energy conversion.
To gather further insights into the transformative role nanomaterials play in electrochemical energy systems, this Research Topic welcomes submissions that span a broad yet defined scope. Areas of focus will extend from materials development to device integration, covering, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Key materials and technologies for secondary batteries (such as lithium-ion, sodium-ion, metal-air batteries);
• Key materials and technologies for supercapacitors;
• Low-energy electrolysis water production technology;
• Key materials and technologies for fuel cells;
• Energy small molecule catalytic conversion (CO2RR/NRR/NO3RR, etc.)
