About this Research Topic
This Research Topic is closed for submissions.
Background
The realm of interactions between police officers and individuals experiencing mental health crises represents a complex field fraught with both challenges and risks. Operating under the heightened awareness of mental health and its influences on public safety, police are expected to manage these encounters with refined strategies and interventions that are effective, trauma-informed, harm-reduced, with a minimal footprint, and based on latest scientific evidence . The existing scholarly discussion underscores a range of dynamic issues, such as the risks posed to individuals in distress and the police officers involved. Despite focused attention and some progress in defining best practices, gaps remain evident—particularly in the integrated application of psychological, sociological, and practical perspectives to develop more effective methodologies.
This Research Topic aims to construct an intricate, multi-faceted view of the challenges and viable solutions surrounding police interactions with individuals in mental health crises. It seeks to distill effective pre-, during, and post-crisis intervention strategies that secure the safety of all involved parties and explores the impacts of these interactions on the officers' mental health. An imperative goal is to critically evaluate and enhance existing frameworks and training programs to better equip officers for managing such high-stakes scenarios.
Our focus spans known constraints, including the feasibility of current training programs and the multifaceted nature of mental health crises. We welcome contributions that delve into, but are not limited to, the following themes: • Systemic responsibilities in crisis situations • Socio-economic factors shaping crisis dynamics • The psychological interplay within crisis encounters • Organizational strategies in police training and response
Considerations of submissions should lean toward innovative, reflective methodologies and emphasize the importance of effective communication and its impact on broader societal contexts. We urge the submission of interdisciplinary works that drive forward a nuanced dialogue aimed at improving response strategies.
Important note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
