Open access publisher Frontiers moves to a new article metric platform COUNTER

To ensure even more transparent and consistent data reporting, Frontiers has moved to a new metric platform COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources). It is an initiative that provides standards and protocols for measuring and analyzing usage data for online scholarly content. Established in 2002 and endorsed by publishers, librarians, and research institutions around the world as a trusted source of usage data, it secures credible, consistent, and compatible statistics of electronic resources. COUNTER Release 5 (R5) is the latest version of the COUNTER Code of Practice. It includes new metrics and reporting requirements for measuring the usage of online scholarly content, such as articles views and downloads, by providing more granular and flexible reporting options. COUNTER R5 allows publishers and authors to measure the impact of their research and ensure their usage data is consistent and reliable. It provides item metrics, trend data, and open access usage. This includes: displaying human views and downloads on public pages, which excludes bots by applying newer standard of Counter 5.02 (2023+) software. Frontiers’ Volunteers: A people’s park full of London lore

Frontiers’ volunteers have always been at the forefront of community and societal responses. Amy Tighe shares her volunteering efforts cleaning up a local park and learning more about its history. Prior to this, I did an MA in English Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London and I’m hoping to start a part-time Psychology Conversion MSc this autumn. I have done a lot of outdoorsy jobs, such as working at one of London’s city farms and teaching horseback riding, as well as working in hospitality.” What does the organization you volunteered for do? “The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park (FoTHCP) is an award-winning local charity that protects and cares for the Cemetery Park, which hasn’t been a ‘living cemetery’ since 1966. It’s now a 31-acre nature reserve, open to all, and is London’s most central urban woodland and one of its ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries. Dog-walkers, joggers, families, school groups, and those looking for an unusual stroll for a date are all daily users, and the surface has been resurfaced with recycled materials to make it more accessible for wheelchair users and buggies.” Photo […]

Funders share insights on open science

Earlier this spring Frontiers hosted a research funders discussion forum to explore the challenges and opportunities faced by funders in supporting and incentivizing open science. Representatives from the European Research Council (ERC), Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO), Volkswagen Foundation and FIIBAP came together for the first time in an open discussion about the respective roles of funders and publishers in open science. Credit: Frontiers During the conversation they all agreed that, while the level of support offered may differ depending on the type and size of the funder, all share a common objective to facilitate open access publishing and other open science practices for researchers. During the discussion, the funders shared their policies on open science and their approaches to creating guidance for researchers. Open access to publications and open research data were identified by the participants as priority issues. All funders reported finding it challenging to focus on the various elements of open science simultaneously but also acknowledged that it was critical to be able to do so. Frontiers responds to the US National Institutes of Health’s call on public access to science

The National Institutes of Health, the foremost federal agency for medical research in the US and the world’s biggest public funder of biomedical and behavioral research, has launched a call for information to improve public access to the findings of its supported research. A summary of our response We support a scalable, cost efficient, transparent publishing model that delivers public value for money, and we think Gold Open Access publishing is the most effective way of securing that outcome. Green Open Access publishing removes some barriers and does not perpetuate inequity, but we think lifting its standards for discoverability and sharing Green open access files widely will prove too great a cost to the taxpayer. Top scientists to address climate emergency in Montreux this week

Jayati Ghosh – It’s not just analysis, it’s a call for action

Author: Sorcha Brennan Professor Jayati Ghosh taught economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi for nearly 35 years, and since January 2021 she has been a Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She has authored and/or edited 20 books and more than 200 scholarly articles. Recent publications include When Governments Fail: Covid-19 and the Economy, Informal Women Workers in the Global South, and Demonetisation Decoded.Jayati has advised governments and consulted for international organizations, including the International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). She is also a member of several international boards and commissions, including the United Nations High-level Advisory Board on Economic and Social Affairs and the WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All.
