Smoking, alcohol consumption, inappropriate diet, and lack of appropriate physical activity can contribute to OS, also in obstetrics and gynecology. Therefore, one of the solutions for the control of these disorders may be adequate nutrition. However, some of the exogenous dietary factors may act as antioxidants, but others as prooxidants by increasing ROS. Exposure to oxidants can lead to microinflammation and subsequent endothelial dysfunction, with eventual cardiovascular disease ensuing.
The interplay of nutrition and lifestyle choices with inflammation and oxidative stress forms a complex web that not only impacts systemic health but also plays a crucial role in oral health. The mouth is often considered a mirror reflecting the overall health of an individual. Emerging evidence has continually reinforced this perspective, highlighting the significant impact of nutritional habits and lifestyle choices on oral health, which can have profound implications for systemic conditions. Oral health issues can be particularly significant in women, especially during pregnancy. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to an increased risk of periodontal disease, which, in turn, has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Similarly, women with PCOS may have a higher risk of periodontal disease due to hormonal shifts.
This special issue provides a unique opportunity to bridge disciplines, bringing together dentistry, dietetics, and medicine insights.
We hope to foster a more comprehensive understanding of how nutrition and lifestyle choices impact inflammation and oxidative stress, with far-reaching consequences in obstetrics and gynecology.
The aim of this special issue is to present original papers as well as reviews related to any aspect of oxidative stress and inflammation, their physiology, biochemistry, and physiopathological bases in obstetrics and gynecology conditions. Their possible relation to nutrition aspects and oral health will be highly welcome.
