Background

Within the realm of physical activity and sports science, the intersection of exercise interventions and disease prevention for special populations remains a significant domain of research. Current studies emphasize the critical role physical activity plays in mitigating disease risks and enhancing health outcomes, particularly amongst populations with distinct needs, such as those participating in adapted or Paralympic sports. The interplay between stress, biological maturation, exercise prescription, and recovery presents a complex landscape where environmental strategies could optimize physiological adaptations. However, the stimulus-performance-adaptation paradigm varies across different conditions and needs more investigative exploration to tailor disease prevention and management better.

This Research Topic aims to elucidate how targeted physical activity interventions can prevent and manage diseases within diverse, special populations. The research will focus on unravelling the optimal exercise interventions that mediate health benefits, reduce disease risks, and improve health and performance metrics. We also aim to test hypotheses related to how precise monitoring of exercise load and stress factors contribute to these health outcomes, prompting new approaches for integrating physical activity into disease management plans.

To gather further insights within the boundaries of disease prevention and management through physical activity, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• The role of physical activity in reducing disease risk in special populations.

• Effective exercise prescriptions tailored for disease management and therapy in diverse groups.

• The impact of stress and recovery processes on disease outcomes and management.

• Physiological and psychological responses to exercise interventions and their implications for health.

• Innovations in monitoring training load and their impact on disease prevention and health metrics.

This topic invites various formats, including original research, systematic reviews, and clinical trials, aiming to foster rich scientific discussions and advancements in utilizing physical activity for disease prevention and management.
