Open for submissions: New Specialty Section Obesity

by Victor Kouassi, Frontiers Under the leadership of Prof. Katherine Samaras  of St Vincent’s Hospital and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney, the journals; Frontiers in Endocrinology, Frontiers in Public Health and Frontiers in Nutrition have launched a new specialty section on Obesity. The section is now open for submissions. The Obesity Specialty Section is intended to reflect the multidisciplinary research and strategies developed in this subject from “champions from every paradigm of science, clinical practice, public health, economics and policy” states Specialty Chief Editor Prof. Samaras. With figures from the WHO showing a doubling worldwide of obese individuals since 1980, obesity has rapidly become an issue deserving of immense attention in countries of all levels of income. The need for faster and widespread dissemination of research findings to mitigate and tackle this issue are increasingly in demand. In her recently published Specialty Grand Challenge article, this threat is described as an “Obesity Armageddon” which can be dodged by encouraging “innovative science in obesity, to integrate scientific effort between the disciplines”. Asked on what attracted her to launch this section in Frontiers, Dr. Samaras said, “The Frontiers series of journals are at the cutting edge. The process of Peer Review is innovative, […]

Interview with Review Editor Petia Koprinkova-Hristova

by Erica Namigai, Frontiersin.org Petia Koprinkova-Hristova is a renowned researcher in Computational Intelligence, and is currently an associate professor at the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Koprinkova-Hristova is an active reviewer for a number of scientific journals, among which are Neurocomputing, Neural Networks, and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, and is a Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience. How long have you been a reviewer for Frontiers and what made you decide to be a reviewer for the journal? I was invited two years ago by a colleague. What do you like about the peer review process at Frontiers? I have the opportunity to communicate with the authors throughout the review process. At Frontiers, peer reviewers are recognized on the article. Is this important to you as a reviewer and as a reader of researcher papers?  For me it is not that important because I think that the paper should be estimated based on its quality but not with respect to the reviewers who assessed it. Are you happy with the way peer review works in general?  I am happy with the peer review process. This year’s theme […]

Call for Mentors: Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution

Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution is seeking experienced researchers to join a new mentorship initiative where PhD students have the opportunity to curate an open-access article volume around a given theme. The aim of the program is to provide graduate students with crucial insights into academic publishing and the peer review process. Mentors in this program will work alongside students to consider relevant themes in ecology and evolution which can shed light on emerging research areas, or delve deeper into an already established one. Students will pair with mentors to develop a Research Topic proposal and identify key authors to contact about contributing. Mentors will also handle the review of manuscript submissions. Following closure of the topic, students will be encouraged to write an Editorial summarizing the collection and placing it in a wider context. If interested or would like to know more, send us an email at: ecologyandevolution@frontiersin.org

He earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive and Neural Systems from Boston University in 1994, and he was previously an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland. Professor Contreras-Vidal is a Review Editor for Neuroprosthetics, the section cross-listed between Frontiers in Neuroscience and Frontiers in Neurology devoted to the study of brain-machine interfaces and neuroprostheses. He is also a Topic Editor for Frontiers in Human Neuroscience for the Research Topic Mobile Brain/Body Imaging and the Neuroscience of Art, Innovation and Creativity. How long have you been a reviewer for Frontiers and what made you decide to be a reviewer for the journal? I have been a reviewer since July 2011. I joined Frontiers because I believe in open access, transparent and expedited reviewing. Moreover, I find the overall quality of Frontiers journals to be very good. What do you like about the peer review process at Frontiers? I really appreciate that Frontiers is open, authors […]

The Retraction Procedure at Frontiers

by Gearoid Faolean, Frontiersin.org As an academic publisher, Frontiers utilizes peer review to ensure academic rigor is applied to all manuscripts submitted to our journals. Frontiers system of peer review, using our unique Collaborative Review Forum and supplemented by a number of in-house quality checks, ensures quality at scale and has a high satisfaction rate among its users. Despite a rigorous process and clear criteria for acceptance and rejection of manuscripts, no system is entirely fool proof and retractions are an occasional and unfortunate, but necessary, resort for some published papers. Articles are retracted in proven cases of scientific misconduct, major errors – including honest – and various forms of publishing malfeasance listed below. Retractions are first and foremost about correcting the scientific literature and ensuring the integrity of published research. As a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), Frontiers abides by their guidelines and recommendations in cases of potential retraction. Frontiers also abides by two other key principles, as recommended by COPE: Retractions are not about punishing authors. Retraction statements should be public and linked to the original, retracted article. While all potential retractions are subject to an internal investigation and will be judged on their own […]

New mentorship program for PhD students

Frontiers is  excited to announce a mentorship program which will give PhD students the opportunity to curate an article volume around a specific theme. The project is called a Research Topic and it’s with the open-access journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. Students will pair with more experienced mentors to propose a topic and identify key authors to contact about contributing to the volume. This represents an opportunity for students to gain insights into peer review and publishing processes. Students will be directly involved in: Generating a topic proposal Determining the scope of the topic Writing the topic description Considering potential contributors and types of submissions. Following closure of the topic, students will be encouraged to write an Editorial that will summarize the collection and place it in a wider context. If interested or would like to know more, send us an email at: ecologyandevolution@frontiersin.org. Deadline to apply is October 15, 2016.

Frontiers in Medicine welcomes new Specialty Chief Editor of the Dermatology Section

We are delighted to announce Prof. Robert Gniadecki as our Specialty Chief Editor of the Dermatology Section in Frontiers in Medicine. Prof. Gniadecki (University of Alberta, Canada) is past President of the Danish Dermatological Society, a board member of the European Society of Dermatological Research and International Society of Cutaneous Lymphomas and serves on the editorial board of several journals. Prof. Gniadecki’s research focuses on translational aspects of cutaneous oncology with a focus on the pathogenesis and experimental therapy of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas and immunology of skin cancers. His clinical research areas include psoriasis, skin cancer risk, radiotherapy and phototherapy of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Prof. Gniadecki emphasizes the importance of dermatology in light of our improved understanding of the intricate interactions within the human body. He said: “Skin is the largest immunologically active organ in the human body and skin inflammation has profound effect on other tissues and organs, in particular the cardiovascular, endocrine and the central nervous system.” Furthermore, he underscores connections between dermatology and other medical disciplines and the importance of accounting for these to advance the field because “dermatology is deeply rooted in general medicine and skin diseases and cannot be fully understood without reference to other medical […]
