Background

In the face of mounting challenges driven by intensifying climate change, rapid population growth, and increasing global resource limitations, plant science has emerged as a pivotal field for addressing critical issues such as food security, ecological conservation, and sustainable economic development. Today, plant science plays a central role in propelling the modernization of agriculture through the integration of intelligent and precision-driven technologies.

At the intersection of plant science and engineering, Smart Sensing is transforming every stage of agricultural production—from land preparation to real-time crop management. Leveraging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and advances in plant physiology, these innovative systems are setting new standards in efficiency and sustainability. Notably, such advancements provide essential support for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including "Zero Hunger," "Climate Action," and "Life on Land."

This Research Topic focuses on "Smart Sensing in Plant Science: Advancing Plant-Environment Interactions for Sustainable Phytoprotection". It aims to explore how intelligent smart sensing technologies empower phytoprotection practices, optimize plant resource use efficiency, and facilitate the translation of green control strategies from laboratory research to large-scale field implementation. In this Research Topic, we welcome all article types published by Frontiers in Plant Science that focus on, but not limited to the following themes:

• Intelligent sensing technologies for monitoring and managing plant-environment interactions
• Integration of smart systems for improved phytoprotection outcomes at scale
• Translating research innovations in smart sensing to real-world agricultural practice
