FRONTIERS DISCUSSION: Goals in Nutrition Science 2015 – 2020 from Frontiers on Vimeo. The field of nutrition has expanded over the past couple of decades with the scope of research now incorporating a number of disciplines ranging from molecular science and molecular genetics to brain energy. Dr. Johannes le Coutre, Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Nutrition and Head of Perception Physiology at the Nestlé Research Center, says brain energy metabolism and research in how the brain is affected in vulnerable situations has become critical in response to questions about cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Professor Pierre Magistretti, Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Neuroenergetics, Nutrition and Brain Health and Dean of the Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), agrees. He says bringing together neuroenergetics and nutrition is a natural development of the field. Over the years, le Coutre and Magistretti have been collaborating on ways to merge research in brain energy metabolism into the field of nutrition. They say in the last 15 to 20 years, scientists have identified potential targets for intervention that go beyond advances in drugs. Instead, they are looking at how nutrition can be used […]

On October 7, 2015, upon the kind invitation of the Young Researchers Network (LYRN) and the Department of Biology and Chemistry at PSI, I had the pleasure of speaking with students and fellows of the institute on scientific writing and publishing. As the former Managing Editor of a journal in biotechnology and these days the Program Manager of the health portfolio of journals at Frontiers, sharing my experiences in peer review and publishing with the research community is a real highlight of the job. Some of the questions that I was presented with, both while preparing for and during the presentation, included: How do I choose which journal to submit to? With students in the audience, my usual answer to this is, of course, Nature or Science, as inevitably the students and young fellows are the ones that need to conform to the system the most and such high profile publications significantly boost their careers. In addition to the Impact Factor, which remains the measure of quality used by many funders across the world, other factors to take into consideration include the intended audience of the paper (e.g. if you wish to reach a specific community), the ability of the publisher […]

Frontiers eBooks are now listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). The first titles went online in November and can be found here. The list will gradually expand, in order to include all published Frontiers eBooks. DOAB is a service of OAPEN Foundation, an international initiative dedicated to Open Access monograph publishing, based at the National Library in The Hague. Having as a primary aim to increase discoverability of Open Access books, it supports the OAI protocol for metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH), in order to maximize dissemination, visibility and impact. Service providers and libraries can use the protocol to harvest the metadata of the records from DOAB for inclusion in their collections and catalogues. Aggregators can integrate the records in their commercial services and libraries can integrate the directory into their online catalogues, helping scholars and students to discover the books.
