Background

Bamboo, recognized as one of the fastest-growing plants globally, exhibits unique biological characteristics and holds significant ecological and economic value. Despite its ecological and economic importance, the complex molecular, hormonal, and nutrient-related processes underlying bamboo’s rapid growth, along with the genetic and epigenetic regulation of its aging and flowering, remain incompletely understood. Recent studies have advanced our knowledge of molecular breeding techniques, such as gene editing and marker-assisted selection. Studying DNA methylation and histone modification roles can illuminate these enigmatic processes. Additionally, the potential of bamboo forests in contributing to nutrient cycling and climate change mitigation through ecosystem services is an emerging and vital research interest, highlighting the necessity for comprehensive studies in this field.

This Research Topic aims to elucidate bamboo's biological complexities and ecological contributions, enhancing the understanding of its molecular and biochemical characteristics.
