About this Research Topic
This Research Topic is closed for submissions.
Background
Malnutrition and food insecurity profoundly affect human health, necessitating the consumption of nutrient-rich diets. While the significance of optimal nutrition for human growth and well-being is well recognized, gaps still exist in the availability and quality of such diets. Recent advances in genetics have paved the way for the development of crops with enhanced nutritional profiles, aiming to bridge these gaps. However, challenges remain in effectively integrating these advances into food systems to ensure wide accessibility and adoption.
This Research Topic aims to explore the intersection of genetics and food production, focusing on genes associated with the food industry, enzyme systems, and enhancement of nutritional value in crops. The goal is to harness genetic technologies to bolster the nutritional content, flavor, texture, and overall quality of food, while promoting sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. By understanding and manipulating these genetic factors, it is possible to improve not only food quality but also the efficiency of food production systems, contributing to long-term food security.
In an effort to deepen our understanding of how genetic advancements can materially benefit food production and nutrition, this Research Topic will cover a broad spectrum of related themes:
• Advanced biotechnological applications in the food industry.
• Analysis of crop genotypes to enhance nutritional and sensory properties.
• Strategies to boost food processing and add value for producers and consumers.
• Exploration of genes critical to food industry enzymes and gene transfer methods.
• The utilization of genetic diversity in crops and livestock for improved food quality and system resilience.
• The use of gene editing to minimize allergenic compounds in plant-derived foods.
• The role of genetics in scaling up quality food production and supporting nutrition.
We invite submissions of original research, reviews, and mini-reviews that address these areas.
Keywords: genotype, Food Production, Genetics
Important note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
