Frontiers in Plant Science (FiPS) is off to Brazil from October 25 – 29 for the triennial International Plant Molecular Biology meeting, held this year at Iguazú Falls. If you’re attending the 11th International Congress of Plant Molecular Biology (IPMB 2015) in Brazil this month, we’d love to see you at the Frontiers booth. Stop by to learn more about Frontiers in Plant Science — the third-largest journal overall in plant science, and ranked first for volume and impact factor among Open Access titles — or to meet the chief editors of the Plant Evolution and Development, Plant Metabolism and Chemodiversity, and Plant Systems and Synthetic Biology sections. We’ll have flyers, giveaways, and more, and will be happy to talk to you about joining our editorial board, hosting a Research Topic, our innovative interactive peer-review system and more. We look forward to meeting you at booth 10 in the exhibitors’ area, October 25 – 29! You can also find us on Twitter @FrontPlantSci

Frontiers Science Hero: John Mauro from Frontiers on Vimeo. Frontiers Science Hero, John Mauro is Frontiers’ Chief Editor of Glass Science. He is also Senior Research Manager in Glass Research at industrial glass company Corning Inc. in Corning, NY, USA. A Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, Mauro is also the co-inventor of several new glass compositions. “If it’s glass, I’m interested,” says Mauro, in an interview with Frontiers where he shares how his passion for glass initially started. “I first fell in love with glass when I was 6 years old,” he says. Better understanding the structure and the properties of matter, makes it possible to produce glass with better characteristics for industrial applications. “Glass is well known as one of the most difficult problems in condensed matter physics,” he says. As part of his job, John Mauro builds new glass models, together with colleagues, to understand the material’s behaviour. These models can, in turn, be used to efficiently design new glass compositions. But John Mauro is not only interested in the scientific aspect of the material. He also loves the artistic side of glass applications. In this interview, he tells us about Corning’s work with artists to help him “learn […]

If you visit the Frontiers website today, you’ll notice a big change. We’ve introduced a new web design that loads faster, is more visually appealing and is fully responsive on all platforms. The most noticeable change is the amount of content and the number of ways visitors can access the latest published research on the site. In the previous version of the site, we were only able to showcase one article a week, but now we are able to highlight more articles, eBooks, the journals our editors and science heroes from around the world. The journals are also much easier to find and browse through. Transforming the Visitor’s Experience While we have done minor tweaks over the past few years, this is the biggest redesign of the homepage that we’ve done since our launch in 2007. The new homepage features a number of technological changes that will help you learn more about the different Frontiers research publishing tools, keep up-to-date with our latest news and find what you are looking for quickly and efficiently. And if you’re already familiar with our platform and have come to submit your paper, we’ve made that easier as well. The “Submit your paper” is […]

Not all people have equal access to science. In places where funds are particularly scarce, open access to science could bring fortune. Defining fortune The development of a country is officially measured with statistical indexes such as income per capita, gross domestic product, life expectancy and literacy. Science literacy is more subjective and is not normally considered a basic need; it is nonetheless, of great value for development of a country. From my tiny perspective, science literacy can enrich a population not only locally, by knowledge or application in specific fields, but also very profoundly in the form of wide-spread learning in proximity with the scientific reasoning. Exercising the scientific method builds critical thinking, favoring informed political choices, the adoption of healthier lives and sustainable interactions with the natural environment. Less developed countries tend to invest less in scientific training; often, this is due to their primary need to invest on basic education, health, and infrastructures for their population at large; sometimes it is due to a certain kind of political interest in keeping the population uninformed and conformed. In parallel, it remains a reality that publishing quality scientific articles and data has inherent costs. These are covered by the majority of […]
