Frontiers in Medicine: new section on Regulatory Science open for submissions

The evidence-based development of policies for regulatory authorities, these days known as Regulatory Science, is emerging as a critical component for advancement of medical research and practice. Frontiers in Medicine is proud to be part of the progress with our new section on Regulatory Science, led by the Specialty Chief Editor Dr. Beatriz Lima (iMED.Ulisboa, University of Lisbon). Medical research and practice have greatly benefited from the rapid developments in science and technology. The progress comes with unprecedented circumstances that are not easily manageable under existing regulations. Regulatory Science is therefore critical for formulating evidence-based policies to support innovations in medicine that can be translated into practice and improve patient care. Regulatory science has a broad outreach and involves key players from the pharmaceutical industry, academia, regulatory agencies, health institutions and health technology systems. Successful development of common principles, policies and guidelines is only possible when experts from various fields are involved in the process. Furthermore, it is of utmost importance that medical students are prepared to deal successfully with these demands at the workplace. The Regulatory Science section is currently building an international and interdisciplinary editorial board and invites submissions on the regulatory science aspects in the field of […]

ActúaLoop awards celebrate innovation in Research Social Networks

The First Awards Ceremony for innovation in research social networks, ActúaLoop, will take place on 23 June in Madrid. ActuaLoop was set up by Loop, the research network powered by Frontiers, and the Center of Support for Technological Innovation (CAIT) of the Technical University of Madrid. Teams from the Technical University of Madrid were given the opportunity to develop ideas which utilized Loop’s APIs by creating innovative applications around the academic and publishing industry. Six ideas were then chosen to compete for the top three prizes: First prize: €5,000 Second prize: €3,000 Third prize: €2,000 At the ceremony teams will be awarded and be given the opportunity to network with investors, businesses and more to help them expand on their ideas and projects in future. Frontiers’ award-winning IT team provided mentorship along the way to help the university teams develop their ideas, providing them real-world experience and the chance to see their idea move from concept into reality. Frontiers CEO part of Forum 100

Kamila Markram, CEO and co-founder of Frontiers, has been named in L’Hedbo’s Forum 100 list. Each year the magazine names 100 innovators from French-speaking Switzerland. Kamila Markram, as well as being the CEO of Frontiers, is a neuroscientist and autism researcher. In 2007 she co-founded Frontiers, the open access scientific publisher, with her husband Henry Markram.  Their mission is to open up the flow of research knowledge by creating impact-neutral peer reviews while publishing research rapidly and making it openly accessible to all. Kamila’s goal and continuous push for innovation fit perfectly with the theme of the 12th edition of the Forum 100, which was ‘Un monde de nouvelles frontières’ – ‘a world of new frontiers’ looking at globalization. “With 2 million research articles published each year and growing, the traditional system of delaying valid research articles for years in rejection cascades and behind subscription paywalls is dysfunctional and not aligned with the needs of the research communities and society,” explains Kamila.  “We started Frontiers because we felt that researchers need to be empowered in taking publication decisions, and that all bias or political decisions in deciding whether a paper is published should be removed so that innovation can happen democratically and faster.” […]

Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology welcomes Prof Ranieri Cancedda as Field Chief Editor

Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology is delighted to announce Professor Ranieri Cancedda as the journal’s new Field Chief Editor. Ranieri Cancedda is Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Genoa and founder of the University of Genoa spin-off company Biorigen Srl. After graduating with an MD from the University of Genoa Medical School, Prof. Cancedda carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and Washington University School of Medicine in Missouri. He was also a visiting professor at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, New Jersey, and previously served as Professor of General Biology at the Second University of Naples before returning to take up professorship in his hometown of Genoa. Prof Cancedda’s primary research interests lie in the field of tissue engineering, regeneration and repair. From early on in his research career, Prof Cancedda sought to understand how injured tissues are repaired and later began developing novel tissue reconstruction methods using the active molecules involved in wound healing, stem cells and engineered biomaterials. He was one of the founders and the first president of the European Tissue Engineering Society – now the European chapter of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS).
